FAQ

Questions people ask

Short answers about the icons, the styles, the licence and the tools.

Basics

What it is

What the library is and what is in it.

What is an icon library?

An icon library is a set of small pictures drawn to the same rules, so they look like they belong together. Product teams and developers use them in buttons, menus, lists and status marks. A good library has the ideas you need. It also keeps size, weight and style the same across all of them.

What is UIX Icons?

UIX Icons is an original, open source icon library drawn on one 24 px grid. Each icon comes in 15 styles, and three of them are free under MIT. It has a shared interface set plus icons for many fields, from healthcare to developer tools. Every icon is original to this library and checked before it ships.

How many icons are there?

13,491 unique icons. Every one in 15 styles. That is 202,365 SVGs, and we add more every month. We count each drawing once, so one icon in 15 styles counts as one icon. The icons sit in 71 categories. The site reads the count from our review records every time it builds.

How many styles does each icon have?

Each icon has 15 styles. Regular Rounded, Regular Sharp and Solid are free under MIT. The Pro styles are Thin, Light and Bold in rounded and sharp, plus Duotone, Twotone, Bulk, Gradient, Glass and Tile. All of them come from one master drawing, so they match.

Which industries are covered?

The library has 71 categories. There is a core interface set plus fields such as healthcare, maps, smart home, nature, food, smart city, developer tools and education. 18 fields have their own page on this site. Each page shows its approved icons and a live count.

Licence and Pro

Licence and price

What is free, what Pro adds and how Pro works.

Are UIX Icons free for commercial use?

Yes, in the free styles. Regular Rounded, Regular Sharp and Solid are free and open source under the MIT licence. You can use them in products you sell and in client work. MIT does not cover the Pro styles. They are proprietary and need an active subscription. The license page and the Pro page have the details.

What does Pro add?

Pro adds the twelve styles beyond the free three: Thin, Light and Bold in rounded and sharp, plus Duotone, Twotone, Bulk, Gradient, Glass and Tile. In the browser, Pro styles carry a PRO label. Eight of them are there today, and the Sharp weights and Glass are coming. A Pro licence key, which arrives after checkout, opens them.

How much does Pro cost?

Pro is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly. Checkout shows the price and billing period before you pay, and the Pro page explains how it works. You can cancel from your account. The free styles cost nothing and are open source under MIT, with no key or account needed.

Do I need to credit UIX Icons?

No visible credit is needed in your product. MIT only asks you to keep the copyright notice and licence text with copies of the icon files, for example in your source code or package. The license page has the full terms. This covers the free styles. Pro styles follow the Pro terms on that page.

Originality

How we keep it ours

How we make sure every icon is our own drawing.

Are UIX Icons original?

Yes. Every icon is original to this library, drawn on our own grid. Each idea starts as a one-line picture that is approved before drawing. Then the master is drawn in our own grid format. No shapes come from another icon set, in any style.

Do you trace other icon sets?

No. We look at well-known open source sets to learn which picture people expect and to compare quality. We never import, trace, copy or change their paths. A lookalike check runs before release. It blocks any icon whose points sit too close to an icon in another set.

Why do some icons look like icons in other sets?

Because good icons follow habits people already have. A magnifier means search and a bell means alerts in almost every set. We use the picture people expect, so the icon reads without a label. Then we draw it our own way, on our own grid, with our own shapes.

How are icons checked before they ship?

Each drawing is shown next to the same idea in Hugeicons, Lucide, Tabler and Phosphor. It is checked at 16 px for clarity, weight and whether it is ours. Only icons marked good ship. A redraw clears the old verdict, so the new drawing gets checked again.

Design

The grid and sizes

The grid, the weights and the sizes.

What grid are the icons drawn on?

Every icon sits on a 24 by 24 grid, with points snapped to quarter-pixel steps. Circles, squares and tall or wide shapes share set keyline sizes, so icons look the same size. A minimum gap between parts keeps shapes open in every weight, from Thin to Bold.

What stroke weights are there?

Four: Thin, Light, Regular and Bold. Each comes in rounded and sharp. Rounded styles use round ends and round corners. Sharp styles use square ends and pointed corners. All eight stroke styles share one centre line, so switching weight never moves anything in your layout.

Can I change the stroke width and colour?

Yes. The detail panel in the browser lets you set size, colour and stroke before you copy. If you leave colour unset, the SVG uses currentColor, so it takes the text colour from your CSS. For bigger changes, open the icon in Studio and edit its paths on the grid.

What size should I use the icons at?

Icons sit on a 24 px grid, and every icon is checked at 16 px. So 16 to 24 px works best in an interface. Larger sizes suit feature lists and empty states. At very small sizes, Solid holds up best, and so does Bold, a Pro style.

Using the icons

Formats and tools

Formats, tools and how to get the icon you need.

Which formats are available?

Today the browser copies icons as SVG, JSX, Vue, Svelte, a web component, a data URI or CSS. It also downloads SVG or PNG. Studio exports SVG and JSX. AI agents can run the open MCP package today. npm packages, a CDN, a Figma plugin, Framer, WordPress and a hosted MCP endpoint are coming soon. We only call a channel live once it works.

Can I use UIX Icons in Figma?

Yes, by copy and paste. Copy an icon as SVG from the browser and paste it into a Figma frame. It arrives as vector paths you can edit. A Figma plugin is coming soon. It will let you search icons and insert them as components with style and weight switches.

Is there an npm package or React component?

Not yet. An npm package and React, Vue and Svelte components are coming soon. Today the detail panel copies a single icon as JSX, Vue or Svelte code, ready to paste into your project. The docs page will show install commands only once they work. The one package you can run now is the MCP package for AI agents.

Can AI agents use UIX Icons?

Yes. An agent should only use icon names that appear in /llms-full.txt or /icons.json, never invent an icon, and say so when none fits. The open MCP package, which you run locally, gives it three tools: search_icons, get_icon and list_icon_styles. Every icon has synonyms and tags, the words people and agents use to ask for it.

Are UIX Icons accessible?

The icons are drawn to read at small sizes, with even weight and open shapes. The rest depends on how you use them. Give icon-only buttons an accessible name. Hide decorative icons from screen readers with aria-hidden. Keep a label next to icons that carry meaning, and check colour contrast.

How do I request an icon?

Search the browser first and try a synonym or two. The icon may be there under another name. If it is still missing, write to us through the contact page. Tell us the word you searched, what the icon is for and where it will appear. Requests help us decide what to draw next.

What is UIX Icons Studio?

Studio is a free icon editor in your browser, on the same 24 px grid as the library. Open any library icon or start from a blank grid. Edit paths, set stroke and fill, preview at four sizes and export SVG or JSX. Your work saves in your own browser and is never uploaded.

Using icons

Using the icons in a project

Short answers for developers and product teams.

How do I add an SVG icon to React?

Copy the icon as JSX from the detail panel and paste it into a component. It is plain JSX, so it works in any React project. The icon uses currentColor, so CSS colours it. An npm package with React components is coming soon.

How do I add an SVG icon to HTML?

Copy the icon as SVG from the detail panel and paste it into your page. Set a width and height, or size it with CSS. Add aria-hidden if the icon is decorative. A CDN link and sprites are coming soon.

How do I change an SVG icon colour with CSS?

Our SVGs use currentColor, so the icon takes the text colour of its parent. Set color on the parent element and the icon follows. You can also pick a colour in the detail panel before you copy. No extra fill rules are needed.

Do you have a Figma plugin?

Not yet. A Figma plugin is coming soon. It will let you search icons and insert them as components with style and weight switches. Until then, copy an icon as SVG from the browser and paste it into Figma as editable vector paths.

Do you have icons for Framer or WordPress?

Framer and WordPress are on the list and are coming soon. Today, copy an icon as SVG from the browser and paste it into a Framer code component or a WordPress HTML block. We call a channel live only once it works.

Can I use UIX Icons as an icon font?

Not today. The icons are SVG, which stays sharp at any size and takes CSS colour. Copy them as SVG, JSX, Vue, Svelte, a web component, a data URI or CSS. An icon font is planned for Pro. It is not out yet, and this page and the changelog will say when it is.

Can I use the icons in an email or a slide deck?

Yes. Download the icon as PNG at the size you need, since many email apps and slide tools do not accept SVG. Set the colour first. For web pages and apps, SVG is the better choice because it stays sharp at any size.

Can I use UIX Icons offline?

You can keep any icon you copy or download and use it offline. The browser itself needs a connection to load. Studio saves your work in your own browser. Packages for local install are coming soon. Nothing in the icon files needs a network call.

Choosing

Choosing a style and a size

Which style, which size and when.

Solid or duotone icons: which should I pick?

Solid fills the main shapes with one flat colour, and duotone adds a soft tint inside the outline. Solid is free under MIT and duotone is Pro. Both come from the same drawing. The styles page shows them side by side.

Should my icons have rounded or sharp corners?

Rounded icons have round line ends and corners, so they feel soft. Sharp icons have square ends and pointed corners, so they feel firm. Both share one centre line. Regular Rounded and Regular Sharp are both free. Pick the one that matches your brand.

Which icon style is best for an app?

Regular Rounded suits most apps, with Solid for selected and active states. Choose Regular Sharp if your brand is firm and exact. Pro adds weights and layered styles if you want more range. All styles come from one drawing, so they match each other.

What size should app icons be in a UI?

Use 24 px for most icons, and 16 to 20 px inside buttons, chips and dense rows. Touch targets should still be at least 44 px, so pad small icons instead of enlarging them. The Design answers above cover larger sizes and which style holds up best.

Can I mix icon styles in one design?

Yes, if you do it on purpose. Use one style for idle controls and another, such as Solid, for the selected state. Every UIX Icons style comes from one drawing, so a mixed screen still lines up. Avoid mixing different sets.

What is the difference between outline and filled icons?

Outline icons draw the shape with a line and are light on the page. Filled icons are solid shapes and stand out more. Outline is common for idle controls and filled for active ones. In UIX Icons, Regular is outline and Solid is filled.

Licence

Licence and use

What the free styles allow.

Can I use these icons in a commercial app?

Yes, in the free styles under MIT. The answer on free commercial use above covers the details, and the license page has the exact terms. Pro styles can be used in commercial work too, while your subscription is active, under the Pro terms on the license page.

Can I modify the icons?

Yes, in the free styles. MIT lets you recolour, resize and edit them, and you can change paths in Studio. The license page lists what to keep with the files. Pro styles are not covered by MIT, so edit only the free ones.

Are these icons open source?

The free styles are, under the MIT licence. That covers Regular Rounded, Regular Sharp and Solid for every icon. The other twelve styles are Pro. They are proprietary and need a subscription, so they are not open source. Anyone can use the free ones.

Can I use the icons in a template or a UI kit I sell?

MIT allows it for the free styles if you keep the copyright notice and licence text with the files. Pro styles are proprietary, so do not include them in a template or kit you sell. Ask us through the contact page if you plan something large.

Is there a free trial of Pro?

We have not announced one. The Styles page shows sample icons in the Pro styles, but opening one in the browser needs a Pro licence key. If a trial is on offer, checkout shows it before you pay. The free styles are free to copy today.

Requests

Missing icons and help

Where to turn when the icon is not there.

What if you do not have the icon I need?

Search with a synonym first, then check the nearest category. If it is still missing, tell us on the contact page: the word you searched, the meaning and the screen. We add icons every month, and requests shape what we add next.

How often do you add new icons?

We add icons every month. Each new icon comes in all 15 styles after it passes review. The icon browser always shows every approved icon. The changelog lists the larger changes to the site and the library, so you can see what is new.

Do you sell brand logos?

No. Brand logos are not part of the library, because logos belong to their owners and have their own rules. Get logos from each brand. Our icons cover generic ideas such as card, cloud, share or chat. Using a brand's logo is the owner's call, not ours.

Why does the icon browser not show every style?

Four styles are still being added to the browser: the three Sharp weights (Thin, Light and Bold) and Glass. All four are Pro styles. Everything free is already there, and the Pro styles that are there open with a licence key. The icons exist in all 15 styles, and the browser shows more of them as they arrive.
